Description
This is shot from Discovery Point, which is the most popular place to photograph sunrises at Crater Lake. On a typical summer weekend, you'll probably find anywhere from half a dozen to a score of photographers attempting to get sunrise snapshots at this location. This was not the case, however, on the chilly July Sunday morning that I got this shot. Only one other photographer, a shutterbug from Germany, had showed up. Why? Because of the clouds: everyone was scared away by the clouds. Yet it is precisely the clouds that make the shot. In mountains, clouds tend to form on the western slopes and over the divide. But they don't trail off eastward (at least not in the summer). That means often there will be a window in the east for the sun to make an appearance at first light. Never let clouds scare you away from sunrise shots in the mountains!
